Car Painting Basics Every Car Owner Should Know

1. Things You’ll Need

The first thing you will need to start off with, is a place like a garage or something, that can keep your car protected from elements and dust particles. It is very important as dust particles sticking to your car white painting will make things worse. You still have to take certain precautions and follow standards of protocol to make sure that an excellent paint job is done. Once all of that is done, now it is time for you to collect the materials such as face mask, primer, paint gun, safety glasses and air compressor etc. You will need your car paint code, to get the exact paint. For a car that is small or medium-sized, you will need a gallon of primer, three gallons of topcoat and three gallons of clear coat.

2. Preparation

After you are done with organizing and purchasing the materials, it is now time for preparation. It is a very crucial step towards a good paint job. If you are working in a garage or a space like that, you will have to sweep the floor, clean the dust if there is any and make sure there is nothing that might obstruct your work. You can settle the dust by hosing down some water and if you intend to paint underneath a tree or something like that, then don’t, as anything can drop from the tree and ruin the finish. Moving on, wash the car to wipe off any dust, dirt or grime.

You will need to decide what you want to paint first. Painting things like the engine bay will add to the complexity of the job and require mechanical assistance. If you have decided to work on the exterior first, make sure to mask areas, you are not painting at the moment.

3. Stripping

You are now at a point where you have organized and purchased every material you need, swept and prepared the place and it is time to strip the car. This step requires sanding in circular motions so that you are able to remove the top coat, base coat and clear coat. It is suggested that you do this with a sander, but for the corners, you will have to do it manually by hands. You have got the right car paint code, but that’s not it. In order to achieve the best paint job, it is recommended that you strip down the car to bare metal so that the new prime coat adheres to the surface well. After you are done with the tiring task of stripping down the area and making the surface smooth as possible. You will need to wipe the exterior down with paint thinners or clean rag to remove any dust and finally wait for the residue to evaporate.

4. Priming

Priming will require you mastering the technique first. You will need to mix the primer with thinners and for that you will need instructions for the correct ratio. The best way to practice is to get a junk piece from the junkyard and practice on that. The art lies in the movement of the spray gun. You will need to make sure that it is perfect for the perfect paint job.

That’s it. Now that you know how to paint your car, get your car paint code and other material and start doing it. You can always use a car paint shop if you have other things to do.
